Now, if you’re really imaginative you can sorta see where they were going with this – you need souls to level up, and you also need souls to upgrade your gear. If you’re matching characters based on their souls, then characters that beat the game at a low level and then buy a bunch of high level upgrades will be matched against people who are much higher level than themselves.
