In my friendship and courtship with my partner, Billy, over the past decade, I learned love has no limits. Love has no boundaries when people have the ability to make their own decisions on how to live their lives and what they want out of it. Like any other person would. My visit to Rhode Island a few weeks ago rekindled a relationship years in the making. It initially faltered due to pressure from society as well as pressure from outsiders looking in. Some people looked down at Billy as a person with many limitations, because of his cerebral palsy. In reality, he has the same wants and needs as anyone else: They see us as regular people in love.
CP And Dating?
AB and CP people dating? That is a great question. I have asked people the same thing and I never really get an answer that helps me. It seems most people have had people around them growing up who encouraged them enough so that they were never scared or affected by people who treated them badly. I don’t run into things like what you wrote that are more honest about what it’s really like to live Hi Brian, I would like to wish you both well and hope that everything works out as you wish:
Growing up on a farm an hour outside of Geelong was ‘interesting’ for Thomas Banks. Born with cerebral palsy and being gay meant finding love became an online effort.
Unlike our first karaoke night back in October, the turnout was small; when we got to the club, we found out that it was just us and Anita, the organizer of the event. Maybe it was because the event was held on a Friday night and it was hard for many of the invitees to go to a club for drinks and singing almost right after work.
Or maybe it was because another classmate had scheduled a disco dancing get-together in Doral that same night. Maybe it was because my mom never treated me as if my CP was the sole factor that defined me as a child. So for a while, I was just a happy-go-lucky little tyke who just had issues with tying his shoes or stumbling and falling more than his playmates. I was even precocious about girls; in third grade I was gutsy enough to tell one of my classmates that I wanted to be her boyfriend.
We ended up going together from third grade till I was in sixth grade. She was a year ahead of me, and since junior high what we now call middle school started in seventh grade, her departure for another school campus marked the end of our relationship. She started noticing other boys and developed a crush on one of them. Then she broke up with me. This breakup made me lose much of my self-confidence, and since by now I was in regular classes instead of in Special Ed ones I was surrounded by attractive girls who were not disabled.
I had crushes on many of them, but when I hit puberty or puberty hit me , I became too self-conscious about my CP.

Going Dancing With Cerebral Palsy
Print article Dear Wanda and Wayne, I am a year-old male with cerebral palsy, and all my life I have walked with the aid of forearm crutches. Needless to say, this has made it difficult to meet women, although I have had a few serious relationships. Everything more or less works, if you know what I mean. Since it’s hard to get women to give me a chance until they get to know me and that’s something I’ve pretty much come to terms with — let’s face it; I walk funny , I’ve turned to online dating.
At first I was totally honest about my disability, even sharing photos of myself in crutches. But I got zero response, so instead I didn’t say anything at first and waited until I could talk on the phone with someone before I told them.

I guess that makes me a millennial yikes! I do want to talk about dating with disabilities though, because I believe that this topic is super important. Discussing dating with disabilities is important, because often society views the disabled population as inferior and almost non-existent. This absurd idea is completely false. As someone with cerebral palsy myself, I think I hopefully can try to tackle this subject with some first hand experience!
It personally took me a long time to admit to myself that I had CP, and then accept my body for all that it is. One of the biggest pieces of advices I can give to those of you who want to begin dating is please make sure you are ready to! I was one of those people who rushed it in the beginning, and that did not end in my favor. I have been lucky and I am incredibly grateful for that; every guy who I have dated has been so gracious when I told them about cerebral palsy, and what that means for how my body functions, and they all have said that CP is really a non-issue for them.
It funny thinking about how I was treated, because I am now reflecting on the fact that there may have been some level of self-sabotage on my end which ultimately led to some dating demise.
